Lena Schmitt
Theatrical Director
Hello! I'm Lena, a director and theatre artist based in NYC with roots in Boston. I first caught the directing bug when I was 11 years old, directing an original show in my backyard, and I've been hooked ever since.
My current practice revolves around exploring how the mundanity of human emotions explodes into the extreme and the consequences associated with that catharsis. I am fascinated with discovering how moments of release feel to a character, an actor, and an audience, and how the identity of each of those parties changes how it is received.
I honed my craft at Emerson College, graduating cum laude with my BFA in Theatre with a concentration in Direction. In my time as an undergraduate, I directed 4 full-length plays and musicals, three new short works, and worked as an assistant for some truly spectacular peers, faculty, and guest directors. In my junior year, I received the College's Penelope Hirsch Student Directing Award “in recognition of excellence in the craft of theatrical direction”.
For examples of my work, please see my portfolio and resume.
